Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Understanding the Condition and Treatment Options

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects the hand and wrist. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm to the hand, becomes compressed at the wrist. This can cause symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers.

The condition is caused by a variety of factors, including repetitive motions of the hand and wrist, such as typing or using a mouse for long periods of time. Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and pregnancy.

The most common symptoms of CTS include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers, especially in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers. Pain may also be felt in the wrist and forearm. Symptoms are often worse at night and can affect the ability to perform daily tasks.

There are a variety of treatment options available for CTS, including:

  • Splinting: Wearing a splint at night can help keep the wrist in a neutral position and reduce pressure on the median nerve.

  • Medications: Over-the-counter pain medications can help reduce pain and inflammation.

  • Physical therapy: Exercises can help to stretch and strengthen the muscles in the hand and wrist.

  • Steroid injections: Injections of corticosteroids can help to reduce inflammation and pain.

  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to release the compressed median nerve.

In most cases, CTS can be treated non-surgically, with a combination of splinting, physical therapy, and medications. However, in some cases, surgery may be necessary to release the compressed median nerve.

Preventative measures can also be taken to reduce the risk of developing CTS, such as taking frequent breaks to stretch and rest the hands and wrists, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding repetitive motions.
